What’s in a Name?
Every
time we speak someone’s name, we speak of their
identity, character, divine mission, purpose, position and more. I have many names. My parents named me Barbara - my legal
name. Barbara is on my passport,
driver’s license, credit card, bank account…all of my official documents. When someone, other than my Dad, calls me
Barbara, I respond in an official capacity.
Different
Names
My
friends call me by my nickname, Tommi.
When I hear Tommi, I respond as a friend. My husband calls me Sweetheart. When he does, I respond as his sweetheart. He also calls me Tommi (friend). My children call me Mom and I respond as
their Mom. My grandchildren call me
Grammy and I respond as their Grammy. I
am not five different people. But I do have different characteristics, qualities,
attitudes and responses that are released which each name.
The LORD’s Name
The
name of the LORD is described as great, wonderful,
glorious, everlasting, exalted, holy…the list goes on. It is impossible to combine all of who the LORD
is in one word. Perhaps that is why
there are so many names given to Him.
Depending on what name we call the LORD, it releases that character or
response we desire from Him.
Names of God
Several
of the names of God that describe His character are: Ancient of Days, LORD God, Most High,
Everlasting God, God Almighty, I AM, Eternal God, Jealous, Living God, Holy One
of Israel, Mighty God, Heavenly Father, King Eternal, Sovereign, Father of
lights and LORD God of heaven. Some of
His titles are Creator, Judge, King, Defender, Preserver and Shepherd. He is holy, majestic, our protector and
healer who does wonders.
Names of the
Holy Spirit
A
couple of the Holy Spirit’s names describing His character include the Spirit
of God, Truth, Holiness, Life, Adoption, The Helper, Eternal Spirit, Teacher
and Comforter. The Holy Spirit guides
us, gives us discernment, anoints us, baptizes us, empowers us, reveals the
things of God to us and even illuminates our minds.
Names of
Jesus
Jesus’
name was given before His birth. It’s hard to believe
His name is hated by the world. Deeds are done in His name.
Miracles are performed by His name. Believers are baptized
in His name and suffer for His name. He is also known as Christ, the Anointed
One, Savior, Author of salvation, King of kings, Lord of lords, our Bridegroom,
High Priest, King of glory, Light of the World, Lion of the tribe of Judah,
Messiah, Prince of peace…the list goes on.
David
Describes the LORD
King
David described the LORD as his strength, his shield, his glory, his rock, his
fortress, his deliverer, his strong tower, his shelter, his refuge, his
stronghold and his light. He also declared God was his King, his hiding place,
the portion of his inheritance, one who answers his cry for help, the horn of
his salvation who is worthy to be praised and his
rescuer who delights in him. David
declared God sets him on high places, trains his hand for battle, keeps his
feet from slipping and is a very present help in time
of need.
What the Word
Says
Scripture
encourages us to believe in the name
of the LORD, to pray in the name of
the LORD, to exalt the name of the LORD,
to honor the name of the LORD, to trust in the name of the LORD and to run into the name of the LORD.
Run into the LORD’s Name
As
children of the Most High God, we have the privilege of running into the name
of the LORD. Proverbs 18:10 says, The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the
righteous runs into it and is safe. (NAS)
In every situation, we have a choice as to how we will respond. We can run into the name of the LORD and His
place of safety or we can run into the counterfeit, the stronghold of
Satan.
No
matter what you are facing, whether it brings fear, hopelessness, sadness,
anger, despair or terror…choose to run into the name of the LORD. Run into all that His name means, all that it
stands for, the fullness of the character of the LORD. The LORD’s name is the place of
safety, protection, hope, joy, peace, comfort, prosperity and victory.
Get Ready to
Run
Determine
in advance which place you will run to when faced with a decision or
choice. Run quickly into the name of the
LORD. On your mark…get set…go!
