As One!

On September 18, 2011, several hundred South Korean Church leaders, along with over a 100 international intercessors and prayer leaders gathered near the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The DMZ is the border between North and South Korea. We were there to pray for the Lord's deliverance and transformation of North Korea at an event called Prayer Initiative for North Korea (PINK).

A Divided Nation

What is occurring in the North is probably the most oppressive and evil situation on earth. The nation has been called a vast prison camp in which the most awful suffering is being experienced by a great majority of the population. Government officials like Kim Jong II live a luxurious life while millions starve. The best way to explain what is going on in the North, is to compare Kim Jong Il with Hitler. Only Kim Jong Il has exterminated more people and is arguably more evil.

PINK

During an All Nations Intercessors (ANI) Conference, Sarah Lee, president of ANI along with Youngchae Song shared about this initiative which united many streams to flow together. John Robb, one of the main organizers for PINK, invited me. I have been on 3 of his teams in the past: Bosnia-Herzegovina after the war in 95 praying for reconciliation, Germany in 97 praying against witchcraft at Mt. Brocken and Rwanda in 98 praying for reconciliation after the genocide. I have been praying for the unification of Korea since the fall of 1980 when we lived in Taegu. I have taught in this nation at least once a year for the past 14 years.

Three Main Focuses

There were three main focuses for PINK during our three days of meeting – reconciliation, intercession and proclamations. Sarah Lee threw her arms around me and said, Tommi! I am so glad to see you again! You had such an impact on my life! I went to your training sessions and you taught me about intercession.

Military Outposts

We spent time at military outposts at the DMZ where young soldiers fill a two-year assignment and are stationed ½ mile to one mile from the border. Their leader shared that these young men constantly fight fear. He asked us to pray for them. We didn’t need to be asked twice. Some stood and prayed as a group. I prayed for individuals and declared their destiny over them. As I did, these strong soldiers began to cry. They did not mind that others could see tears falling down their cheeks. They let them fall. I prayed protection over these precious soldiers and hugged them as they hung to me embracing hope. It is difficult for most in the US to comprehend living next to a nation that invades and annihilates people. All of the soldiers we met were born again, passionate Christians and full of the Holy Spirit. It was our great honor to minister to these fine young men. Next, we went to a military chapel to worship with a group of soldiers from another outpost. Their worship team, complete with drums and guitar, was fabulous and it was a very uplifting time.

Prophetic Picture

Outside one of the buildings at the DMZ was a bronze sculpture of a globe cut in half with the dimensional shape of the entire nation of Korea on the inside. There are people on each side of the globe trying to push it together. To me it was a prophetic picture of our assignment: for North and South Korea to come together “AS ONE!”

After the tour, we met to listen and pray together. A very petite N. Korean lady in her early twenties shared what it was like to be a N. Korean woman married to a S. Korean. As far as I understood she escaped from the North twice. Once Soo (alias) escaped to China and was captured, sent back and imprisoned. Later, she escaped to the South and joined her husband. She talked so fast in Korean while sharing her story and speaking about reconciliation that the translator could not keep up with her.

North Korean Lady

PINK leaders requested Soo lead us in a time of prayer. She fell to her knees and cried out. I don’t know exactly what Soo said or prayed, but I knew enough to know that she was in powerful intercession. A few ladies in leadership were asked to gather around her. I knelt down next to this precious young woman and started praying, weeping and proclaiming over her as I prophesied into her ear. I don’t even know what I said. Suddenly, Soo stopped crying, looked at me in surprise. And she said, Tommi! I know you! and we went back to praying. I thought – I don’t know this young lady. I have no idea who she is.

I Know You!

Afterwards, Soo told me, I have a picture of you on my phone. She took out her cell phone and showed me a picture of Ralph, me, others and her. You were my teacher – you taught me at the YWAM base at Jeju-do. I looked at her in amazement and remembered having two North Korean students in my class. The fact that Soo remembered my name and had a picture of me that she carried on her phone for about six years was deeply touching. When Soo shared how I had impacted her life, it was just overwhelming. Keep in mind, that this beautiful petite young lady had just shared her testimony about her capture and imprisonment, was ministered to and was now leading prayer for Korea to be As One!

Passionate for Freedom!

A young South Korean/American, who is a human rights activist, shared his story. Paul (alias) worked his way into the North without a visa or green card, hoping to get caught. He was caught and tortured for three months. Just like the young lady, Paul did not talk about how he was tortured. Although, he did share what torture is like. One of the methods was shown to us in sketches. They torture every pregnant woman who has Chinese or S. Korean in their blood line. It is sickening.

Effects of Torture

Paul was a shell of a wounded person, hunched over with long, dark 60s hippy hair. He couldn’t make eye contact. It was evident to all how very deeply affected Paul was by the torture he experienced. Paul has dedicated his life to bring worldwide focus to what is happening in North Korea and is rallying people to come to the South to march against injustice in the North. The intent is to put a demand on the United Nations and the nations of the World to put a stop to this injustice.

The Next Steps

Later I spoke on reconciliation of nations. I told Youngchae, “Not to worry! I know what the next steps are.” I said, “I declare, I come as an Apostle called to this nation. And, from this position of authority, I speak to the North and to the South. I declare you are one. I honor those who have gone before us. I am going to pray a prayer that Kjell Soberg prayed over the wall between East and West Germany. I pray it now for Korea.

Father we bring before Your throne today every prayer that has ever been prayed about the North and the South by those on both sides of the border and people all over the World. We ask that You would amalgamate those prayers into one prayer. And, by the power of that one prayer, we declare the North and the South “As One!”

The Warrior's Battle Cry!

Throughout the day, we kept hearing that we should speak about and view Korea “As One” That reminded me of Lance Wallnau’s – “AS ONE!” - where everyone does a karate chop motion with their right arm and declares “AS ONE!” together in a loud voice. It was fun sharing about Korea and what God wanted. This was the next step – we needed to come together “AS ONE!” I told them, “Every one of you is a warrior – a champion warrior. I train warriors and champions. We are going to do a prophetic act. Follow me.” They responded with amazement. I demonstrated the “AS ONE!” prophetic act. We repeated it over and over until it resonated within them and they proclaimed in unison. It echoed throughout the room.

Identificational Repentance

Then, I did a mini-teaching on face-to-face identificational repentance. I role played this with one of the pastors. I said, “I am not your mother – but I stand before you representing your mother. I ask if you could find it in your heart to forgive me for not being the mother that you needed me to be. For not loving you the way you needed me to love you. For not encouraging you the way you needed me to encourage you. Would you forgive me?” With tears in his eyes, he responded, “Yes. I forgive you.” To which I responded, “I receive your forgiveness and release a mother’s blessing on you.” Several people told me that it deeply touched their heart. They took it as though I was speaking to them as their mother. We ended my session with the “AS ONE!” cry.

Dr. Yonggi Cho

Dr. Yonggi Cho spoke one evening. Even though Dr. Cho did not look like my dad, his expressions, mannerisms, the twinkle in his eye and the joking that he did were so much like his. It was fascinating listening to him share how he started in ministry and knew what God called him to do. It was powerful.

Vivacious Veronika

My 20+ year-old room mate Veronika, from Sierra Leone was one of the PINK leaders. At one point, Veronika walked to the podium, took the microphone and let out a prayer unlike anything I have ever heard in my life. I mean, it was powerful. It was passionate. It was anointed. She is a precious young woman.

This is NOT a Proclamation!

The third day of PINK focused on proclamations and I was really expecting proclamations by leaders at the podium. But, they were petition prayers. They were so pastoral. I cried to God, God, don’t tell me that we have done all this work and they haven’t stepped up in proclamations. I went over to the Sarah, who led the intercession. I said, We are not breaking through. This is NOT proclamation – we have got to shift. She responded, I know, I know. I replied, They are keeping us in the same level. I am praying that we will shift to proclamations. Sarah responded with boldness, I will take care of it. I was seeing the same thing. This was all the confirmation that she needed to go up to the platform and shift the atmosphere.

Proclamations at Last

Sarah designated several ladies to make proclamations from the platform. The first very stately lady was from Canada who enunciated very clearly, I proclaim…… and she let out a powerful proclamation. As soon as she did this, you could feel a shift in the atmosphere. I proclaim… Then she let out another one. They were truly proclamations. The other people did not know proclamations. She shifted the prayers. The second lady followed, I proclaim…. I proclaim… They brought up this teeny, tiny petite lady, and she also brought proclamations. We finally got the breakthrough. Thankfully!
